Losing Our Forests

March 4, 2014 by

Over the last decade an average of 6,000 acres of forest and open space has been lost per day in the United States. That’s four acres per minute. That’s an area the size of the city of Seattle every nine days!

In 2003, the wildfires in Southern California’s devastated more than 800,000 acres, including a total of nearly 450,000 acres in four National Forests. The Hayman Fire in Colorado was one of the worst wildfires of 2002, burning nearly 138,000 acres in the Pike-San Isabel National Forest in Colorado. These are only a few examples of thousands of intense wildfires that have burned in many of our nation’s forests over the past ten years.

With that loss comes the loss of wildlife, food, medicines, water filtration, flood control and so much more. There are over 190 million acres of land in our U.S. National Forests, but that number is shrinking drastically. Trees are essential to humanity. We literally can not live without them because they provide the air we breath.

National Arbor Day

In the U.S., Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April. On this day individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. There is no better way to celebrate National Arbor Day than with the planting of a new tree.

Arbor Day originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska. On the first Arbor Day, on April 10, 1872, an estimated 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska. Here at Memorial and Dedication Trees we plan to celebrate National Arbor Day this year with the plating of 25 new trees. We hope you too will celebrate Arbor Day with the planting of a new tree. We can help you facilitate your gift to our beautiful planet with our tree planting packages and services.

Benefits That Trees Have On Our Environment

Trees are the longest living organisms on the planet, and one of Earth’s greatest natural resources. Trees provide food, medicines and materials. They moderate climate, improve air quality, conserve water and harbor wildlife. We could not live without trees because they take carbon dioxide from the air and replace it with oxygen. Trees provide protection for all beings.

Benefits That Trees Have On Our Environment

· One tree can produce nearly 260 pounds of oxygen annually.
· Two mature trees provide enough oxygen annually for a family of four.
· Trees make water cleaner by filtering rain.
· Trees absorb carbon dioxide produced by motor vehicles.
· One tree removes about 1 ton of CO2 annually.
· Trees evaporate water in their leaves, which causes air-cooling.
· Trees provide habitat for birds and other wildlife.
· Tree bark has many medicinal properties.
· Tree roots stabilize soil and prevent erosion.
· Trees add color to the landscape and enhances the picturesque beauty of the environment.
· Trees act as a filter, cleaning the air by intercepting airborne particles, and absorbing air pollutants like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide.

On December 14, 2012, 20 children and 6 staff members lost their lives in a tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. It was the second deadliest mass shooting by a single person in American History. Memorial and Dedication Trees has planted 26 memorial trees, one for each victim, to honor the children and adults who lost their lives that day. We would like to express our deepest sympathy to all the people impacted by this terrible and senseless tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their family and friends.
